How to Use This Calculator

Step 1: Choose what to calculate: Pace, Time, or Distance.

Step 2: Select miles or kilometers.

Step 3: Enter the two values you know.

Step 4: Click Calculate for pace, speed, and time.

Understanding Running Pace

Pace = minutes per mile (or km). An 8:30/mile pace means one mile every 8 minutes 30 seconds. Faster pace = lower number.

Pace translates directly to race planning. At 8:30/mile: 5K=26:23, half marathon=1:51:23, marathon=3:42:46.

Training zones: easy runs 1-2 min slower than race pace, tempo at race pace, intervals faster.

Pace Formulas

Pace = Time / Distance (25min / 3.1mi = 8:04/mi)

Time = Pace x Distance (9:00/mi x 13.1mi = 1:57:54)

Distance = Time / Pace (45min / 10:00 = 4.5 mi)

Speed = 60 / Pace (8:00/mi = 7.5 mph)

Examples

Example 1: 5K in 27:30 = pace 8:52/mile (6.76 mph)

Example 2: Marathon under 4 hours = need 9:08/mile

Example 3: 45 min at 9:30/mi = 4.74 miles

Running Tips

Start slower than goal pace. Most runners go out too fast.

Negative splits win races. Second half faster than first.

1 mile = 1.609 km. 10:00/mi = 6:13/km.

Use pace for intervals. 5K pace minus 1 min = interval pace.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good running pace for beginners?
Most beginner runners start at a 10:00 to 13:00 per mile pace (6:13 to 8:05 per kilometer). The best indicator of the right pace is the 'talk test' — you should be able to speak in full sentences without gasping. If you cannot hold a conversation, slow down. Speed improves naturally with consistency over weeks and months. Many new runners make the mistake of starting too fast and burning out.
How do I convert pace to speed?
Divide 60 by your pace in minutes. An 8:00 per mile pace equals 60 divided by 8 = 7.5 miles per hour. A 10:00 per mile pace equals 60 divided by 10 = 6.0 mph. For kilometers, divide 60 by your per-km pace to get km/h. For example, a 5:00/km pace equals 12.0 km/h. The relationship is simple: pace and speed are mathematical inverses of each other.
What pace do I need for a sub-2-hour half marathon?
A half marathon is 13.1 miles (21.1 km). To finish in under 2 hours (120 minutes), you need a pace of 120 divided by 13.1 = 9:09 per mile or faster. To give yourself a comfortable cushion for hills, water stops, and crowded starts, aim for a 9:00 per mile pace in training. In kilometers, that is about 5:41 per km.
Why is my GPS watch pace different from my actual pace?
GPS watches sample your position every 1-3 seconds and calculate pace from the distance between those points. This can be inaccurate by 2-5% due to satellite signal bounce off buildings, tree canopy interference, and satellite geometry. GPS tends to overestimate distance on curves and trails. For the most accurate pace measurement, run on a measured track or certified race course and use a simple stopwatch.
What is the difference between pace and speed?
Pace measures time per unit of distance — expressed as minutes per mile or minutes per kilometer. A lower pace number means you are running faster. Speed measures distance per unit of time — expressed as miles per hour or kilometers per hour. A higher speed number means you are running faster. Runners prefer pace because it maps directly to race planning: if your pace is 9:00/mile and the race is 3.1 miles, your finish time is 27:54.
How can I run a 5K in under 30 minutes?
A sub-30-minute 5K requires maintaining a pace of 9:40 per mile (6:00 per kilometer) or faster for 3.1 miles. For most recreational runners, this is achievable with 8-12 weeks of structured training. Run 3-4 times per week: one interval session (e.g., 6x400m at faster-than-goal pace), one tempo run at goal pace, and one or two easy runs for building endurance. Consistency matters more than any single hard workout.
