Why Word Count Matters

Word count is fundamental in writing. Academic papers have strict limits. Blog posts perform best at 1,500-2,500 words for SEO. Social media has constraints: Twitter 280 characters, LinkedIn 3,000.

Reading time uses 225 wpm (average adult online). Speaking time uses 150 wpm for speeches and presentations.

How Counting Works

Word Count: Splits text on whitespace, counts segments.

Character Count: Every character including spaces. Without spaces excludes whitespace.

Reading Time: Words / 225, rounded up.

Speaking Time: Words / 150, rounded up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it count numbers as words?
Yes. Any sequence of characters separated by spaces counts as a word, including numbers like 42, 3.14, or 2024. This matches how Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and other word processors count. If a number is part of a hyphenated term like 'COVID-19', it counts as one word since there are no spaces.
Are hyphenated words counted as one or two words?
Hyphenated words like 'well-known' or 'state-of-the-art' are counted as one word because there are no spaces between them. This is consistent with how most word processors handle hyphenation. If you write 'well known' without a hyphen, it counts as two words. The distinction matters when you are close to a word limit.
How accurate is the reading time estimate?
Reading time is based on 225 words per minute, the widely accepted average for adult online reading. Actual speed varies by content type — technical or academic writing may take 50% longer, while casual blog posts may be read faster. The estimate rounds up to the nearest minute, so a 226-word text shows 2 minutes.
Can I paste from Google Docs or Word?
Yes. Copy text from Google Docs, Microsoft Word, PDFs, emails, or any source and paste it directly. All formatting (bold, italic, headers, bullet points) is stripped automatically — only the raw text characters are counted. Images and embedded objects are not included in the count.
Why is my sentence count slightly off?
The counter detects sentences by looking for ending punctuation marks (periods, exclamation marks, question marks) followed by a space or end of text. Abbreviations like 'Dr.', 'U.S.', 'Inc.', and 'etc.' contain periods that may be counted as sentence boundaries. For most text, the count is accurate within 1-2 sentences.
Does it work with languages other than English?
Yes, for any language that uses spaces between words — including Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and most European languages. However, languages like Chinese, Japanese, and Korean do not use spaces between words, so the word count will appear lower than expected. Character count works accurately for all languages.
